Zap #15

Just got the latest issue of Zap and it's one of the best in the last decade. Moscosoe and S Clay Wilson's stuff is good, but no big change in style or technique. Gilbert Shelton drew a new Wonder Warthog, which was never very impressive and still isn't. The issue's standouts are Paul Maviride's and Robert Crumb's new comics. Maviride's pieces are twisted exercizes in surrealism and scatalogy. WOrds can't describe the weirdness, so I won't bother. The crown jewel is Crumb's piece. Started in 1992 and just recently finished, Crumb's new comic is another in a long line of autobiographical comics. This one is about his relationship with his brother Charles, written right after his suicide. In it, Crumb is at his most revealing (which considering his history, is saying something), discussing the basis of his ongoing quest for truth, which apparently Charles was the main instigator. I think this strip is one of his most powerful pieces and works as an epilogue to all of the events in the Crumb movie. Get it.

Good to know Crumb decided to stay the course. After the events of last issue I was kinda worried he wouldn't recover from that brutal Rapidograph attack... Also real nice that they got Mavrides--he's one of the most underrated and VERSATILE (!)artists in the underground scene. Anyone know of any recent work of his outside of ZAP or Church of Subgenius? Bought the excellent "Skull Farmer" sketchbook a few years ago, been hoping he'd cook up something new since then.
