Our Star Trek roster (previously consisting only of McDowell from “Star Trek: Generations”) has been increased by the lovely addition of Chase Masterson, who played Leeta in “Star Trek: Deep Space 9.”

NerdNYC.com and the Gotham Gaming Guild will be hosting the biggest day of gaming at the Big Apple Con yet! With over a dozen different games scheduled so far, Sunday June 7 will be jam-packed with more role-playing and boardgame action than you can throw a double zero on a percentile die at! With no modifiers!

Film Festival News!
After the success of the films screened at last year's National Expo, Big Apple has gone out and found some new and exciting independent films , many of which will seen on the big screen right here for the very first time. The films are:

Features
Drawn by Pain (Saturday)
Methodic (Saturday)
Tomb Raider: Ascension (Fan film; Sunday)

Shorts
A Short Film About Jedi
Back Issues
I Want to be Famous (Saturday)
Pirates Vs. Ninjas (Sunday)

The complete film schedule is not set yet, so check the website in the coming weeks to find the final screening times and latesst additions, and check it right now to find out more about these films.

Costumes, anyone?
I saw a lot of wonderful costumes at I-Con and NY Comic Con, and I would love to see them all at Captain Zorikh's Costume Contest. The contest at the National Expo was the largest and most spectacular ever, and easily overflowed the space in which it was taking place. This time we have a much bigger space in which to hold our contest, and we are working on certain categories in which to reward our contestants.

So those of you who like to dress up, start planning now!

You can see pictures of past costume contestants at http://s175.photobucket.com/albums/w155/thebigapplecon/ and http://ww.myspace.com/bigapplenyc

Volunteers Needed!
As you can see we've got a heck of a show coming up, but we can't get it done all alone. We need folks who can help us spread the word through flyering and other promotional activities and we will need lots of folks to help us pull off this convention on June 7-8. If you think you have what it takes to volunteer to help us, send us an e-mail at bacvolunteers@yahoo.com. Your service will grant you admission to the convention as well as invites to occasional movie screenings and other great bonuses...and our undying gratitude!

Join the Big Apple Movie Club to tell us what you think. It's Free!
That's it for now. I'm off to the Chiller Theater Convention this weekend, so I'm not going to get a chance to see the new Iron Man movie. But if any of you folks do, why not go to the Big Apple c Convention's Movie Club (http://www.bigapplemovieclub.com/), register for the forum, and start telling us what you thought of it? It's the newest interactive community website from the Big Apple, and it is one that will be powered by YOUR participation. New York has some of the smartest filmgoers in the world, especially when it comes to films based on comic book characters, so let's hear what you have to say!

I have a film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around an East Bay cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (the cartoon, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story.
Thought I'd chime in with another unsolicited review... I wholeheartedly recommend Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir, "Fun Home." This is the writer/illustrator of Dykes to Watch out For. The prose is rich, funny, airy, and not forced. Love her art -- clean and really evocative. Lots of very funny bits, but the whole piece is really... er... poetic (hate to use that cheesy word).

Great photos, strips of hers and Robert's I hadn't seen before... fun pics of the interior of their home in France, interesting dirt on her family background (Aline's), as well as a generous amount of material on what she's up to now.

I've always liked Aline's prose and would love to meet her -- a fascinating person with great honesty. Her art is primitive and wouldn't have been my taste if I hadn't been exposed to it in her and R's "duets" (see Dirty Laundry, etc). Anyhoo, I find her hilarious and the book is good eye candy.

We are looking for several graphic artists and writers to join us in collaborating comic strip projects that we are launching soon. We wish to create several series and publish them on our website come4play.com.

In our universe, our heroes and heroines fight for all persuasions, Gay, Straight, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender. Therefore, we obviously want our heroes and or heroines to also represent the diversity of human sexuality.

Since the site is age restricted, contributing graphic artists and writers will have almost complete artistic freedom to express this hot and sexy battle between good and evil.

Writers and graphic artists should be prepared with a pilot strip. Your Pilot Strip submission should come complete a title for your series, synopsis of the character, complete with description(s) that include details about who they are as a super hero and how they live in their secret identity, as well as what cause(s) they fight for and whom the fight against.
Stay tuned for more information and details regarding these projects.

Deepak Chopra and Grant Morrison explore the social subconscious.

Thursday at the San Diego Comic-Con brought an intriguing collaboration. Grant Morrison and Deepak Chopra, having met for the first time the previous night, had a discussion about the role superheroes play in the social fabric.

A superhero is "symbolic expression of the social subconscious," according to Chopra. "The superhero is a mythological being" who exists "beyond outerspace and innerspace, creating a new idea of being."

Even deconstructing superheroes, a '90s movement fronted by the likes of Morrison, "comes from fear," according to the comics writer. "People are scared to be hopeful." And though writers and society pummeled Superman, he persevered and the core character survived for the new era of comics just now emerging.

Chopra suggested that the seven spiritual laws could mirror the seven chakras. "A Chakra is a junction point between consciousness and reality," Chopra explained before leading the audience through all seven.

"First chakra - Stability. Infinite centered awareness and dynamism.
Second chakra - Transformation. An absolute allegiance to transformation. Willingness not to have a permanent identity
Third - Power. Not in the sense of muscle, but in intention.
Fourth -- Love and compassion. Nothing better it is integrated with the rest of the Chakras.
Fifth - Creativity. Always creative solutions.
Sixth - Intuition.
Seventh - Transcendence."

The seven chakras can also be linked to the idea of seven gods, a theme that clearly parallels the seven main characters of the JLA.

"Look at the JLA," Morrison said. "They all map on the chakras. Batman is a human being of ultimate power [and intention.] Flash is communication. Superman is about giving selflessly He represents the sun. He is that thing that loves us unconditionally."

He added later that "Batman is like Christ harrowing Hell, because only he can withstand it. He endures everything for us. Batman is a character who was almost brought to the brink of his destruction," but who persevered. Batman is our shadow and "we have to look at the shadow and integrate the shadow [into our consciousness]."

And "yeah," Morrison admitted, Seven soldiers is an allegory to seven gods. "Mr. Miracle is the transcendent character," the seventh Chakra.

Superheroes are our new mythology. They are not so different from the Greek Gods, who were not as deeply seeded in religion as some may think. But what is mythology on a deeper level?

As Deepak Chopra asserts, a mythology "must address the collective consciousness in a certain archetypal way. It must offer an idealist vision to aspire [towards]." He added that, "a good story should never end and good guys should never win."

"There are six plots that people retell," Morrison said. "These stories are told again and again."

Myth is related to the word mother. As Chopra called it, "the womb of creation." Myth is not just hokey stories that explain why the sun rises and falls. That's a very simplistic view. To put it poetically, myths are where "we express our deepest longing and aspirations of collective being." Myth is a social experience beyond genetic codes or organized religions.

"The human story is about a quest, falling down, but getting up again," Chopra said. "Death and rebirth. It's about redeeming yourself and then redeeming others."

Our existence is still young in the eyes of the universe. "In many ways," Chopra said, "we are reaching puberty. There's a lot of curiosity, mistakes, risk-taking. But it is an exciting time." One full of possibilities, though there are certain to be some growing pains.

Chopra proposed that our current destructive nature may not mean the end of human existence. In fact, it could be part of the natural order of evolution. "The are no fossil records of the evolutionary transition between lizard and bird." It happened, but we have no true proof, just as we cannot find the missing link between ape and man. Chopra suggested that it is possible a species can experience a "creative quantum leap."

Think of a caterpillar. "A caterpillar consumes more than it needs to eat until it reaches a point where its body begins to decay and die. Imaginal cells cluster. The send communications to each other. The caterpillar is imagining a new entity. [The imaginal cells] use the dying carcass of the caterpillar to feed. A dormant gene awakens and the dying caterpillar becomes a butterfly, a completely new creature."

Now consider that "cloning, tinkering with the intelligence of the universe," are "ideas that existed in ancient mythologies." Yesterday's mythologies are today's science.

So think of our modern myths. Think of the superhero. "Look at destruction of environment," Morrison said. Look at what has become of our world and our society. "We are the imaginal cells."

Chopra put it plainly. "Superheroes may be a prelude to an actual leap in our evolution," as our social conscious has the knowledge of the possibility of flight and other incredible, superhuman feats.

SNAP! kicked ass! ( http://www.greenbrain.biz/SNAP!.htm ) It was the best comic convention I ever did. I made over $35 selling my comics -- an unprecedented success! Also, the con further proved my "Population of 6 Billion" theory. That is, since there's apopulation of 6 billion, there exists a small yet substantial number of people who have the mentality to appreciate my comics! Moreover, the secret to my success at SNAP! doesn't really seem that secret. SNAP! had a focus on small press comics. While the comic cons I previously attended -- which were mostly unsuccessful for me -- had a focus on mainstream comics.

Yup! That's what I'm talkin' about! If you want to sell small press comics at a comic convention, then you need to go to a convention whose focus is on small press comics. Again I say, SNAP! kicked ass, and there's still a population of 6 billion!

Moscosoe and S Clay Wilson's stuff is good, but no big change in style or technique. Gilbert Shelton drew a new Wonder Warthog, which was never very impressive and still isn't. The issue's standouts are Paul Maviride's and Robert Crumb's new comics. Maviride's pieces are twisted exercizes in surrealism and scatalogy. WOrds can't describe the weirdness, so I won't bother. The crown jewel is Crumb's piece. Started in 1992 and just recently finished, Crumb's new comic is another in a long line of autobiographical comics. This one is about his relationship with his brother Charles, written right after his suicide. In it, Crumb is at his most revealing (which considering his history, is saying something), discussing the basis of his ongoing quest for truth, which apparently Charles was the main instigator. I think this strip is one of his most powerful pieces and works as an epilogue to all of the events in the Crumb movie. Get it.

Comic Book writer seeks illustrator to work on new graphic novel project. This is an excellent opportunity for any individual trying to break into the business or simply wanting to beef up their portfolio. This project will be pitched to Image, Dark Horse, Black Bull and Oni publishing companies. The story, characters, and world have been thoroughly researched and developed. The next step is your input and line art/inks to create the visual elements of the piece.

Initial work will be character splash sheets and 9 pages of sequential art to meet all proposal standards. Artist must understand anatomy, sequential art, camera angles, hit dead lines and be willing to add their own flair and interpretation.

At this point, payment will be deferred, but this is why we begin at the proposal level. If you think you can handle 3-5 splash pages and 9 sequential sheets in order to launch a new comic, then we can move forward with this exciting project. At the very least, your work will be seen by editors for the companies above.
For me, I'd like to see Snappy Sammy Smoot done by the creators of Ren & Stimpy.

Sorry this is so long. But it's Will Eisner...

> Will Eisner dies at 87
>
> WILL EISNER: A SPIRITED LIFE
> eNewsletter No. 14
> January 4, 2004
>
> An occasional source of information about
> legendary artist and writer Will Eisner
>
> By Bob Andelman
>
> Legendary comics and graphic novel artist and writer
> Will Eisner died last
> night, Monday, January 3, 2005, in Fort Lauderdale,
> Florida, at the age of
> 87, following complications from quadruple heart
> bypass surgery.
>
> Will Eisner didn't create Superman, Batman,
> Spider-Man or even Archie and
> Jughead. Some comic book fans may scratch their
> heads when asked to describe
> his work. But every artist and writer in comic
> books, as well as graphic
> artists across the entire spectrum of modern
> illustration, television and
> film, owes a debt to him.
>
> In 1941, Eisner created a goofball detective named
> Denny Colt who died (not
> really) and was reborn as "The Spirit," the
> cemetery-dwelling protector of
> the public < and pretty girls in particular. The
> Spirit possessed no
> superpowers. He couldn't see through his
> girlfriend's clothing the way a
> curious alien like the Man of Steel might
> scientifically investigate Lois
> Lane. And he wasn't a brilliant technologist like
> Batman, imagineering hokey
> gadgets and psychedelic compounds for all-night
> parties with the Joker.
>
> The Spirit broke so many molds:
>
> Eisner was the strip's artist and writer, a feat
> that is still rare today.
>
> The Spirit was published and distributed as an
> insert in Sunday newspapers,
> ala Parade magazine. It was seen weekly by as many
> as 5-million people from
> 1941 to 1952.
>
> No two Spirit sections looked alike. Although most
> commercial operations -
> from Superman to Pepsi-Cola - spend millions of
> dollars testing, proving and
> marketing their logos, Eisner thought it was more
> challenging to change The
> Spirit's masthead every week - for 12 years.
>
> The Spirit was a fun, mature read, aimed at adults
> but accessible to kids.
>
> For all of these reasons, The Spirit was published
> and reissued in various
> forms almost uninterrupted for 60 years. Its look,
> feel and smartass humor
> is timeless, which accounts for the countless
> revivals.
>
> Eisner, who went to high school with "Batman"
> creator Bob Kane, provided
> first jobs in the comics business to everyone from
> Jack Kirby (co-creator of
> "Captain America" and the "Fantastic Four") to Pulitzer-winning writer
> and artist Jules Feiffer.
>
> If not for Eisner's influence, Pulitzer Prize winner
> Art Spiegelman might
> never have published his graphic novel Maus: A
> Survivor's Tale (Eisner is
> credited with popularizing < if not inventing < the
> medium of the graphic
> novel with the 1978 publication of his graphic story collection, A
> Contract With God) and fellow Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael
> Chabon's The Amazing
> Adventures of Kavalier & Clay would have been
> missing quite a few
> Eisner-inspired tales.
>
> For comic book professionals, the highest honor in
> the industry is either an
> Eisner Award, named for Eisner and given out every
> summer at Comic-Con
> International in San Diego, or a Harvey Award, named
> for Eisner's late
> friend Harvey Kurtzman, the creator of Mad magazine
> and Playboy's "Little
> Annie Fanny," given every April in Pittsburgh.
> Kurtzman, who discovered
> talents as diverse as R. Crumb and Gloria Steinem,
> passed away in 1993,
> making Eisner the last man standing.
>
> Literally.
>
> At every Eisner Awards ceremony, each recipient was
> handed his or her award
> by the man himself.
>
> Several years ago, a big red velvet chair was put on
> stage for Eisner. The
> Eisner Awards promoters said, "Come on, Will, you
> shouldn't have to stand up
> all this time; here, have a seat." Eisner sat on it
> briefly, got a laugh out
> of it, but then he stood up again, and stayed on his
> feet the rest of the
> night. Eisner demonstrated his strength of character
> and enduring physical
> wherewithal by standing on stage throughout the
> entire presentation, shaking
> hands and personally congratulating the winners.
> Because there is a
> different presenter for each award, no one else
> stood for as long as Eisner.
>
> That's why, when Eisner handed the 2002 Eisner Award
> for Best Serialized
> Story (Amazing Spider-Man #30-35: "Coming Home") to
> writer J. Michael
> Straczynski and artists John Romita Jr. and Scott
> Hanna, Straczynski thrust
> the award in the air and remarked, "You know, you
> get the Emmy, you don't
> get it from OEmmy.' You win the Oscar, you don't get
> it from OOscar.' How
> freakin' cool is this?"
>
> Published in November 2004, DC Comics' The Will
> Eisner Companion is the
> first comprehensive, critical overview of the work
> of this legendary
> writer/artist. Divided into two sections < his
> Spirit work and his graphic
> novels < this authorized companion features all-new
> critical and historical
> essays by noted comics historians N.C. Christopher
> Couch and Stephen Weiner,
> as well as alphabetical indexes relating to all
> aspects and characters in
> his oeuvre. Also includes a chronology, a
> bibliography and suggested reading
> lists, as well as an introduction by Dennis O'Neil.
>
> A new generation of comics fans learned about the
> man in the 1970s when
> underground comix publisher Denis Kitchen began
> reprinting "The Spirit"
> stories and eventually produced new stories of the
> character by top comic
> book talent including Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons and
> Neil Gaiman. Kitchen
> became one of Eisner's closest friends and
> confidants, as well as his
> personal representative and literary agent (with
> Judith Hansen). (Kitchen
> can be reached via email at denis@deniskitchen.com.)
>
> More recently, "John Law," a 56-year- old Will
> Eisner character, was given
> fresh life and adventures in 2002 by Australian
> artist and writer Gary
> Chaloner as an online comic book hero at
> ModernTales.com. In December 2004,
> Law returned to print in IDW Publishing's "Will
> Eisner's John Law" hardcover
> trade paperback. These stories were the first
> original John Law adventures
> published since Eisner worked on the character in
> 1948. This edition
> includes both new material and classic John Law
> tales by Eisner himself.
>
> And Eisner's final < and likely most controversial <
> graphic novel, The
> Plot, finished last summer, will be published this
> spring by W.W. Norton.
>
> Will Eisner was the wizard behind the curtain,
> except in his case, the magic
> was real.
>
> There will be no funeral service, per Will's wishes.
> "Will and I hated
> funerals," his wife, Ann, said the morning after his
> death. "We made plans
> long ago to avoid having them ourselves." He will be
> buried next to his late
> daughter, Alice, who died in 1969. Surviving Will
> are his wife, Ann, and his
> son, John.
>
> Cards may be sent to:
> Will Eisner Studios
> 8333 W. McNab Road
> Tamarac, FL 33321
>
> Unofficially, in lieu of flowers, you might consider
> a donation in Will's
> name to the American Cancer Society < his daughter
> died of cancer < or the
> Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which Will was known
> to have supported.
>
> On a personal note, I am crushed. Will and I started
> working on what began
> as an autobiography and morphed into an authorized
> biography three years ago
> this month. His friendship and camaraderie was like
> none other. (Will
> Eisner: A Spirited Life will be published in July
> for Dark Horse Comics' new
> M Press imprint.)
>
> In the days to come, if you'd like to share a story
> or a thought about Will
> and need an outlet, I'll make this newsletter
> available to anyone who'd care
> your words with an international audience of Eisner
> fans and media.

I'm very confident that i can pull off a good workshop but i wanted to post this so i could get some advice from you guys. The age group will probably be 10 to 13 year olds. probably boys. The workshop will be about making strips...and i want to let them know that there is much more to comics than just superheroes and villians. any suggestions? what kind of stuff would you let some young kids in on if you were teaching them about comic strips?

No, he's not in jail or detained by the feminist-Marxist-Homosexualist Axis. He has made a very generous offer that I found on the Comics Journal Bulletin Board-

As relayed by Neil Gaiman on his blog:

"Dave Sim has made an extremely generous offer to readers of this journal (and indeed, to readers not of this journal, but just people who simply hear about his offer elsewhere on the Internet. Memes propagate, after all), which is the kind of offer that I found as interesting as he did. It's this:

If you'd like to read one of the Sandman parody issues of Cerebus, Dave will send you one. He'll send it to you very happily, free of charge. He will sign it for you, too. And he won't charge you a thing. Not even postage.

And if you're wondering what the catch is, it's this: Dave wants to know (as, I have to admit, do I) how many of the people out there in internet-land will actually go and do things that don't involve passively clicking on a link and going somewhere interesting. So what you have to do is write Dave a letter (not an e-mail. Dave doesn't have e-mail) telling him that you read that he'll send you a signed Cerebus, and telling him why you'd like him to send you a copy. It's as easy as that. And, quite possibly as difficult.

The address to write to is:

Aardvark Vanaheim, Inc
P.O. Box 1674 Station C
Kitchener, Ontario, Canada N2G 4R2

Dave, I suspect, thinks he'll get a handful of requests. In my more pessimistic moments, I think he's right, although I'd love it if he got deluged with letters, like those kids in hospitals who don't exist but are still collecting postcards...

We have a second-part of the plan too, which involves doing good things for the CBLDF. But that's for later. For now, if you're even mildly curious, write Dave a letter. Tell him you're curious...

(And for those of you who aren't sure if they want to risk having to go and find a stamp, you could go and look at http://www.cerebusfangirl.com/ -- and at http://www.cerebusfangirl.com/stories/stories.html you can even read several Cerebus short stories from Epic Illustrated, or the four pager from Alan Moore and partners' AARGH anthology.)

(But once you've read them, write Dave the letter. Don't forget to put your address on it, or to say why you'd like him to send you a signed Cerebus comic. And feel very very free to pass the word on to the comics news-sites or groups, or just to anywhere that people who might be interested congregate.)"
